XRSS: The Best of RSS?
Rogers Cadenhead of the RSS Advisory Board has just proposed an add-on to RSS called “XRSS“.
The idea of XRSS is to provide a set of canonical rules for how to compose an RSS document, removing ambiguities of the original RSS spec and removing the “optionality” of some things as well. By adding the xrss namespace to your RSS feed, you are indicating that your feed follows the XRSS specification, and thus a set of “RSS Best Practices.” This does not in fact constitute a revision or follow-on to RSS, but rather a namespaced module.
If successful, XRSS could become a de-facto standard… a sort of “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for RSS. To get there, my guess is that it will need the official blessing of the RSS Advisory Board… and Dave Winer. That may be a tall order indeed.
