Splogger Spoils Chicklet Generator

Randy Charles Morin of KBCafe has been providing a free neat way of adding all of the major RSS subscription chicklets to your site: the RSS Chicklet Generator. To use his free service, you only needed to add a small JavaScript to your web page, and his site would generate a block of HTML that included subscription buttons to Yahoo, Bloglines, etc. (See it in action on the inkBlots homepage.)

Randy had to shut down the service yesterday because a Splogger (Spam + Blog = Splog) generated 1000 or so sites that included the generator script. This immediately accounted for 7% of Randy’s bandwidth, so he had to shut it down. I’d love to tell you how Randy got even with the guy, but I want the next unsuspecting splogger to get the same treatment.

The good news: Randy is going to continue providing the chicklet service to those who will ask him nicely in email. This is bound to be a big hassle for him, so that says a lot about the kind of guy he is.

If you have good ideas about fighting back at sploggers, talk to the folks at Fight Splog! In addition to reporting these guys to Google et al, why not set up a few honey pots for sploggers and then turn the screws on them. Now doesn’t that sound like good clean fun?

Nice. Helen Zhu wants to know if you speak english, but she obviously can’t read english enough to know that the “chicklet generator” didn’t run on gas!

Those looking for an alternate solution to improve feed usability might want to check out the service at feedpass.com. It doesn’t replace Feedburner, but instead works with any feed, including Feedburner feeds to create chicklets, what is RSS pages, etc.

A nice solution for just about any blogger that wants to increase readership and remove the mystery of XML code.
