Neilsen RSS Poll Confirms Obvious

Anybody who uses RSS/Atom knows that you can read more news in less time than surfing to all of the originating websites one at a time. That’s the whole reason blogs made syndicated feeds so popular: Who has time for all that browsing anymore?

Neilsen/NetRatings has just made what you already knew an official fact: RSS Users Read More News Than Web Users

To wit: “Convenience is the primary reason respondents gave for using RSS feeds,” said Jon Gibs, senior research manager, Nielsen/NetRatings. “Once the technology has been adopted, users can easily add new content. This allows news-hungry Web visitors to sample a wide variety of news sources,” he continued.

Okay, now that we have the blindingly obvious out of the way, there were some more interesting tid-bits to be had from the survey results:

  1. 83% of RSS users were unaware that they were using RSS, thanks to portals like MyYahoo.
  2. 78% of RSS users were male.
  3. 48% of RSS users have been using the Net since at least 1994.

Funny to think it is the Old Schoolers who are the early adopters on this one. We need to teach our kids to stop wasting so much time browsing, it seems.

Also funny that so many RSS ‘users’ don’t know they are using RSS. How could they ‘adopt’ a technology they aren’t even aware of?
