Google Desktop adds “Web Clips”

Google Desktop Sidebar - Web ClipsIn another move to generalize the terminology for syndicated feeds, Google has added “Web Clips” functionality to their new Google Desktop 2.0. This comes on the heels of controversy surrounding appropriate labels for RSS and Atom. Web Clips is a panel in the Desktop Sidebar that acts as a mini feed aggregator.

The options for the Web Clips panel reads, “… If you know a site supports RSS or Atom, you can enter the RSS or Atom URL below and add it to your list of Web Clips.”

It is interesting to note that Google calls them “Feeds” on Google News, but “Web Clips” on Google Desktop. This goes to show that the Label Wars haven’t been won even within Google itself.

Update 8/31/2005:
Gmail is now slowing rolling out the “Web Clips” functionality as another offering in your Inbox. It hasn’t been activated on all accounts yet, but the help file for using it is here. Screenshots of what it looks like can be found here.
