There’s a Cylon in my Podcast

Speaking of podcasting, here’s an interesting use of podcasting RSS: The lauded Battlestar Galactica is podcasting producer commentary (like the kind on most DVDs these days) for each episode.

Each podcast is designed to be played along with the corresponding episode. (Presumedly you would do this on your TiVO or VCR, rather than listen to it the first time you’re seeing the episode.)

This is the part I love… remember the old “turn the page when you hear the beep on your record player” days? Yes, that’s how you use the BG podcast commentary: “Start playing each episode’s file when the words “The Cylons Were Created By Man” appear on your TV screen. Beeps will indicate when to pause for commercial breaks.

I don’t know why, but this combination of high-tech and really low-tech delights me.

Somebody with too much time on their hands could take this concept and run with it, doing a garage podcast version of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” on just about anything imaginable. If you’re funny enough, you might actually get a cult following of people who will go out and rent whatever it is you’re podcast-commenting on. (When that happens, I want 20% in revenues for coming up with such a silly idea.)
